Digital Hollywood University announced on October 14 that it will introduce Anthropic's Claude across the whole institution, giving all students and faculty university-issued accounts from November with no concern about usage or cost. It is the first full-campus Claude deployment at a Japanese university.
Why it matters
Claude joins the university's existing all-campus AI platform and campus portal, letting classes design assignments around AI use and tie learning records to the tool. Students and staff gain unlimited access for video and game production, research, thesis writing and administrative work.
WHO IT HITSStudents and faculty at Digital Hollywood University are the immediate users, gaining unlimited Claude access through university accounts. University administrators and educators planning campus-wide AI rollouts may also watch how the school ties the tool to coursework and sets internal AI-use rules.

Digital Hollywood University's move puts Claude into a lineup of generative AI tools already adopted by Japanese universities at scale. Tohoku University led with ChatGPT in May 2023, Shiga University became the first in Japan to roll out ChatGPT Edu across all faculties in April 2025, and Otemon Gakuin University is set to open Gemini to all students in April 2026. Claude's arrival at DHU adds another major AI provider to that mix.
The university is not treating this as a simple account handout. Since September it has operated an all-campus AI platform that lets users work with multiple generative AI tools, plus a campus portal where each class gets an AI teaching assistant. Claude is being added to that foundation, with the stated aim of building students' ability to think and create with AI. Planned uses span video and game production and brainstorming at the undergraduate level, research, analysis and thesis-writing support at the graduate level, and administrative work.
The rollout also comes with a rules layer. DHU says it will redesign education so assignments are built around AI use and outcomes are evaluated accordingly, and will set internal rules on declaring AI use in submitted work and on handling copyright and personal information. Anthropic launched its education-focused plan, Claude for Education, in April 2025, and Anthropic Japan representative executive officer Hidetoshi Tojo commented in the university's press release that experience using advanced AI daily from student days, while understanding its possibilities and limits and using it responsibly, will serve students well in society.
