What happened
A YouGov survey of 1,250 U.S. workers, conducted between July 30 and Aug. 4, 2026, found that only about 3% said they had lost a job due to AI since 2023. Roughly 6% said they landed a job that didn't exist before AI, and about 9% reported a promotion or advancement related to AI.
Why it matters
Four years after ChatGPT's debut in November 2022, AI has not yet caused substantial job losses or gains for these workers, contrary to what some pessimists and optimists predicted. The most significant effect so far appears to be that AI skills are helping some workers move up the career ladder, though it's too early to know if that advantage will last.
What to watch
Agentic AI, a newer form that can act autonomously and automate jobs to a greater extent, may make some current AI expertise less valuable in the future. The survey began when the official unemployment rate was 4.1%, but the workforce was shrinking and AI was reportedly a leading reason for many layoffs.

The survey, commissioned by sociologist Jeffrey C. Dixon and conducted by YouGov, offers a snapshot of worker experiences with AI in the U.S. It contrasts with many predictions from economists and AI companies by directly asking workers about their experiences. The study also differs from some research and a California AI unemployment tracker by not focusing solely on job loss, but also examining job gains and promotions.
While the findings suggest limited impact so far, the survey began in July 2026 when the official unemployment rate was 4.1%, and the workforce was shrinking with AI reportedly a leading reason for many layoffs. The author, a self-described AI pessimist, found it surprising that so few workers reported job losses.
The study is still in progress and has not been peer reviewed. It also notes that survey respondents chose to participate in YouGov's online panel, so their responses may differ from randomly selected workers, and none were jobless at the time of the survey.
