AMD to buy Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 billion

AMD had previously invested in World Labs, so the acquisition formalizes a relationship that already existed. World Labs was founded by Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford professor who previously worked for Google and led AI research and is widely seen as a pioneer in the field.

Earlier this year, Li and AMD CEO Lisa Su presented a World Labs model called Marble, which created a three-dimensional scene out of a few images. At that presentation, Li said intelligent agents, whether robots or vehicles or even tools, can learn inside physics-aware digital worlds before they need to be deployed into the real one, making them safer. Her social media post on Monday struck a similar note, describing the mission as building a world-leading frontier research organization durable for the decades ahead.

The deal is part of a broader stretch in which large tech companies are paying up for top research talent, even at relatively nascent businesses: the body notes OpenAI's purchase of io for about $6.4 billion and Nvidia's combined $33 billion on Groq and Hugging Face. AMD's own stated logic is that the lab's next-generation model research lets it plan for what its AI chips need to be capable of years in advance. Whether that translates into products hinges on the transaction closing later this year and on the lab remaining separate from the chipmaking business until then — a structure that could shape how quickly the research reaches AMD's roadmap.
