Anthropic folds Claude Cowork into Claude chat

Anthropic's move folds several standalone products — Claude Cowork, the Claude Design tool, plus the new Claude Docs and Claude Slides — into the chat interface users already open. The company said customers previously struggled to know which AI tab to choose for a given task, so Claude now routes each prompt automatically. The pitch is a "superapp" that replaces a fragmented collection of AI tools, so context follows the user instead of being shuffled by hand.

That framing puts Anthropic alongside OpenAI, which is believed to be working on a similar superapp folding ChatGPT, its coding agent Codex and possibly its AI browser Atlas into one product. Still, Anthropic's coding agent Claude Code remains separate, at least for now, so the consolidation is not total. The enterprise appeal is control: businesses that prefer simplicity can centralize employees' AI use rather than police many tools.

The risk sits in the billing model. Cowork is designed to reason through multistep tasks and make tool calls, which can consume far more tokens than a simple chat exchange, and users are billed by token usage. The outcome may hinge on whether Claude's routing sends straightforward questions through that agentic machinery anyway, quietly raising compute costs. How Anthropic tunes that routing — and how it prices bundled premium features — will likely shape whether the "one interface" promise reads as simplicity or as a bigger bill.
