Cerebras, an AI chip startup backed by OpenAI and Amazon, files for IPO to challenge Nvidia's dominance

Cerebras Systems—a chipmaker whose AI processors are used by OpenAI, Amazon, and Meta—announced plans to go public. The company competes directly with Nvidia, which currently controls over 80% of the market for chips that power large language models (the AI systems behind ChatGPT and similar tools).

Cerebras builds chips with a different design: instead of many smaller cores working in parallel, it uses one massive processor with 900,000 cores on a single piece of silicon. This means data moves shorter distances inside the chip, reducing delays and power consumption when training or running AI models—key cost drivers that determine whether a startup can afford to build their own AI system.

For business professionals and investors, this matters because Nvidia's near-monopoly has made AI development expensive and has given Nvidia enormous pricing power.
