Perplexity's Portable Computer hits Windows with Nvidia

Perplexity first launched Portable Computer on the DGX Spark as a fully local AI agent platform, and then, on Aug. 25, it arrived for Linux. Its cloud counterpart, Perplexity Computer, plans and runs subtasks through connectors and tools and returns something more than a chat reply, consuming Computer credits for the cloud work. Portable Computer performs the same agent functions on a local PC, and that local work does not use credits. It can still hand tasks to cloud models when the user gives explicit permission.

The Windows release, done in partnership with Nvidia and delivered through the existing Perplexity app, follows Nvidia's Sept. 3 statement that Windows support was coming soon. The hardware bar did not move: a GeForce RTX or RTX PRO GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM is still required, and a Pro or Max subscription is still needed.

For Perplexity, the question is likely whether local execution draws users who want agentic work without cloud-credit costs, and for Nvidia, whether tying the agent to RTX hardware makes that class of GPU more attractive. The conditions are strict, so adoption may hinge on how many Windows machines meet the memory requirement.
