Google introduced Gemini to Android Auto last year, and bringing it to Apple CarPlay has taken almost 12 months. The update lets CarPlay users talk to the voice assistant in Google Maps for hands-free help while driving. This includes asking multi-step questions, such as getting recommendations on places to visit and then prompting it to direct you there while avoiding toll roads.
Google describes the CarPlay support as a conversational way to report traffic disruptions and find information about stops and places on-the-go. However, there is no mention of the Personal Intelligence features announced yesterday for Gemini in Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. Those features enable the voice assistant to access user information from Google apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search. It remains unclear whether CarPlay users will also receive the personalization update.
