Google releases TorchTPU to run PyTorch apps on its TPUs

3 Key Points

  1. What happened

Google announced TorchTPU is now available as an open-source project, letting PyTorch apps run on its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and move to Google Cloud via a simple configuration change.

  2. Why it matters

PyTorch is used by some 85% of AI apps, so a low-effort path to Google's chips and cloud could make it easier for teams to evaluate alternatives to their current hardware setup.

WHO IT HITSAI app developers and startups that use PyTorch, who can now move existing apps to Google's TPUs and cloud with a simple configuration change instead of a rewrite.

Context & Analysis

PyTorch was originally developed by Meta in 2016, long before LLMs changed the world, and many of its features were built to work specifically with Nvidia's GPUs, which were already the standard hardware for AI research at the time. In 2022, Meta turned PyTorch over to the Linux Foundation. Because most AI apps are written by default to run on Nvidia's chips, Google's release of TorchTPU — and Amazon's release of TorchNeuron on Monday — represent efforts to offer alternative paths. Google says it worked directly with Meta, Hugging Face, Inferact (maker of vLLM), RadixArk (maker of SGLang), and others to ensure that TorchTPU's features and code libraries work well with these popular AI development tools, just as the original PyTorch does. Google also launched a dedicated tool, the TPU agent suite, to help developers move their apps to Google's chips and cloud and fix errors along the way, and updated its LiteRT tool, which runs AI on phones, laptops and embedded devices, to work better with PyTorch AI apps. None of this means AI app developers will automatically ditch Nvidia's hardware en masse just because they can now easily move to alternative chips and clouds, but Google and Amazon are clearly working to end Nvidia's advantage.

FAQ
What is TorchTPU?
TorchTPU is Google's open-source version of PyTorch that lets AI apps run on Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and makes it easy to move existing PyTorch apps to TPUs and Google Cloud.
What is PyTorch?
PyTorch is a popular open-source toolkit that AI app developers and startups use to build, train, and run AI models. It was originally developed by Meta in 2016 and turned over to the Linux Foundation in 2022.
How does TorchTPU compare to other efforts?
Google joins Amazon in trying to break Nvidia's stranglehold on the AI industry. Amazon released its own version of PyTorch, TorchNeuron, which allows AI apps to be ported to Amazon's Trainium chip and AWS with no rewriting.
