UMG, ElevenLabs launch catalog remix platform

Universal Music Group's partnership with ElevenLabs marks a turn in how the music industry is approaching AI. Rather than fighting AI music companies in court, UMG is bringing one into a licensed arrangement. The backdrop is litigious: UMG, Sony and Warner sued Suno in 2024, though Warner later dropped out and has since partnered with Suno on an AI music model alongside BMG.

The structure here puts artists in control — UMG's roster must opt in — while giving fans a sanctioned way to remix and rework tracks. Industry executives are working on adopting AI music so that artists don't lose money or control of their work. The hope, per the announcement, is that letting fans play with the technology may demystify it and could make more people open to AI-assisted music down the line.
