Google Search adds AI agents, custom app creation, and seamless switching between AI Overviews and AI Mode, powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash

Google is rolling out an updated search box globally starting Tuesday that makes it easier to move between AI Overviews (AI-generated summaries at the top of search results) and AI Mode (a chatbot-like search experience). The new search box expands for longer queries and offers AI-powered autocomplete, powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash.

This summer, Google will launch AI information agents for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers that can monitor topics in the background when users are offline—for example, tracking when a favorite band is going on tour—and notify users of updates. These agents can access other Google accounts using Personal Intelligence to pull information from apps like Gmail.

Google is introducing a 'generative UI' feature in the coming months that lets users build custom widgets and apps directly in the search engine. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers can create 'super apps'—such as a home fitness tracker that connects to real-time information like weather and calendar—that they can revisit and share with others.

The updated search box is available on desktop and mobile devices globally. Users can still view traditional search results only by selecting the 'Web' tab.
