Broadcom introduces BCM68850, described as the industry's first 50G ITU-PON home gateway SoC with integrated neural processor and Wi-Fi 8 support

Broadcom has introduced the BCM68850, a chip that integrates a neural processor (AI processing capability) on the device and supports Wi-Fi 8 for home networking, combining 50G passive optical networking (PON) with on-device inference in a single platform.

The launch extends Broadcom's AI portfolio from cloud data centers into residential broadband gateways, positioning the company at the intersection of broadband access, edge AI, and next-generation Wi-Fi where telecom and cable operators are seeking to support higher speeds and more connected devices.

If operators standardize on this kind of integrated gateway, Broadcom could deepen its share of bill-of-materials in residential equipment, though it still has to compete on cost, interoperability and software support with existing platforms.
