Microsoft is forming Xbox Labs, a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma says it will turn emerging ideas into things players and developers can experience.
Why it matters
Sharma calls the recent experiments a challenge to long-held assumptions about the tether between software and hardware and the boundary between creation and play, and says Xbox will share tools and learnings with developers.
WHO IT HITSGame developers and modders stand to gain from tools Microsoft says it will share, while Xbox's own game-making teams may see how AI agents could be applied to game software.

Xbox Labs is Microsoft's answer to a wave of decompilations and recompilations that let gamers port classic titles to new devices or merge code from two different games into a single experience. Sharma describes these experiments as challenging long-held assumptions about the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games. She says the possibilities in making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators and co-creators are unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when they challenge existing business models.
Microsoft's own history with Xbox backward compatibility is a reference point, but Sharma notes modders are now doing similar work without the business model restrictions Microsoft is tied to. She argues Xbox has an important role to play because coding became the first major workload for agents, and games share many of those same properties. The company plans to build in the open and share tools with developers across the industry as it learns.
The unresolved question is how Microsoft will respond to unauthorized use of its IP. The report notes that modding is fun, but it is hard to see Microsoft and other publishers seeing the fun side if modern console games start to appear where they shouldn't, and Microsoft did not respond to a request for comment on unauthorized IP use in time for publication.
