Claude voice mode now supports three models, integrates Gmail, Slack, Notion

Anthropic announced Thursday an upgrade to Claude's voice mode that expands its capabilities beyond the limitations that have constrained it since its launch last year. The original voice mode, powered by the Haiku model, was designed for speed but lacked the depth needed for complex tasks. The new update allows users to select between three models—Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku—and automatically uses the fastest version of whichever model they used most recently in text chat. This change immediately opens voice mode to more sophisticated work: users can now hold longer conversations, receive feedback on their communication style, walk through pitches with clients, and brainstorm product market research. A major differentiator from OpenAI's concurrent voice mode release is Claude's new ability to integrate with external applications. Users can connect Claude voice to Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion, enabling direct actions such as updating meeting times, drafting emails, or creating documents—tasks that OpenAI's voice mode cannot yet perform. Anthropic has also expanded language support. Earlier in the year, the company added multilingual capability in beta, and the update now offers support for English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian), and Spanish (Latin America/Spain), though users must manually specify their language. The new voice mode is available in beta across all platforms to all users. However, free-tier users face restrictions: they can only use the Haiku model and connect to one app. A notable limitation is that Anthropic has not modified the underlying voice model in this release and has not disclosed details about its voice stack, meaning users should not expect conversational improvements in areas like interruption handling—gains that OpenAI's recent update delivered.
