What happened
Anthropic filed for an IPO under the ticker "ANT," reporting $16.3 billion in revenue for the first half of 2026, up from $1.2 billion a year earlier, and a net loss of $80.7 billion.
Why it matters
The filing opens one of the most closely watched public debuts in modern U.S. history, giving outside investors their first detailed look at the financial scale of a leading AI developer.

Anthropic's filing caps weeks of leaked S-1 drafts and formally opens the company to public-market scrutiny. The revenue figure of $16.3 billion for the first half of 2026 stands against $1.2 billion in the same period last year, while operating losses narrowed to $693 million from $2.1 billion in the first half of 2025. The net loss of $80.7 billion was largely driven by noncash accounting adjustments tied to convertible debt, a figure the company separated from its operating performance. Anthropic also cautioned that it "may not achieve or sustain profitability in the future."
The filing details an enterprise customer base that extends well beyond small accounts: more than 11,900 customers spending $100,000 or more annually, 1,900 spending $1 million or more, and about 250 spending $10 million or more, as of the end of September. That concentration suggests Anthropic's revenue is anchored by large organizations rather than broad-based individual adoption.
The governance structure has drawn attention. Anthropic's seven co-founders will collectively control 50.1% of shareholder voting power through a "Founder LLC," a setup the company says is designed to preserve its AI safety mission. Because voting power is not proportional to the founders' economic ownership, public shareholders will have little practical control over a company building technology that, by its own admission, poses "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity." Anthropic has not yet disclosed how much it hopes to raise or its proposed share price.
