OpenAI shifts ChatGPT from chatbot to autonomous agent, planning major redesign with integrated tools and partner apps

OpenAI is overhauling ChatGPT—its biggest redesign since 2022 launch—to transform it from a question-answering chatbot into a 'superapp' bundling coding tools, AI agents, and integrations with companies like Canva and Booking.

In the coming weeks, OpenAI will redesign ChatGPT's web and mobile interface with features steering users toward coding, image generation, and partner apps. Over time, these nudges should fade as the models learn to determine what users need independently. ChatGPT, Codex, and other product teams have already been merged under Chief Product Officer Thibault Sottiaux.

OpenAI aims to build toward a 'personal agent' capable of helping users across their personal and work lives, according to Sottiaux. The shift reflects a company-wide move away from chatbots that answer questions toward agents that handle tasks autonomously.
