Fuji Television's announcement builds on work already under way. The company has been using AI in several dramas, including the first episode of 救命病棟24時, where AI generated a fictional aerial shot and smoke was composited. The production was handled by Fuji Television's "AI Sandbox" organization, which has been operating at its Bay Coast Studio in Koto Ward, Tokyo, since September, with cooperation from ANDENT, a video production company based in Shibuya, Tokyo. In some processes, work hours were cut by up to 70–80% compared with conventional methods.
The broadcaster currently produces 16 ongoing prime-time dramas a year on its terrestrial network. By making it possible to choose production methods suited to each work or scene—including AI—Fuji Television aims to tackle expressions that were previously difficult, reduce the burden on production teams, and improve safety. Looking ahead, from around October 2027 the company plans to expand AI use to video-related companies under Fuji Media Holdings, and by fiscal 2029 it aims to have AI utilization capabilities at a "domestic top-vendor level" across the entire group.
