Microsoft, Mistral team up on European AI infrastructure with billions in GPUs

Microsoft and Mistral announced a multi-billion-dollar strategic partnership aimed at expanding AI infrastructure across Europe. As part of the deal, Mistral will add thousands of Nvidia Vera Rubin GPUs to its infrastructure, and Microsoft will gain access to that capacity for its cloud and AI services. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to enabling European organizations to adopt powerful AI while retaining sovereignty over their data.

Mistral's Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models are now available through Microsoft Foundry, with Medium 3.5 also integrated into Copilot Studio. Companies have flexibility in how they deploy these models: they can run them through Azure Local (Microsoft's cloud service), in their own on-premises environments, or completely offline. The offering specifically targets regulated industries—finance, healthcare, and manufacturing—where data residency and privacy compliance are critical concerns. Microsoft President Brad Smith underscored the strategic rationale, stating that Europe should be able to use powerful AI without giving up control over its data.

Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch views the partnership as a pathway to reach companies and public institutions worldwide. Mensch has also recently cautioned that organizations risk exposing trade secrets when they rely on closed AI models, a concern that underscores Mistral's open-model positioning. The company, founded in 2023, has demonstrated rapid growth: its revenue has grown twentyfold to a run rate above $400 million（約640億円）. It invested 1.2 billion euros in data centers in Sweden and is currently negotiating a new funding round of about 3 billion euros at a valuation of roughly 20 billion euros, according to Bloomberg. Recently, Mistral rebranded its chatbot Le Chat to Vibe and repositioned it as an AI productivity tool, introducing Work Mode and Code Mode to expand its product offering.

The partnership reflects a broader European push for AI sovereignty and data protection.
