Google announced a "universal" Gemini AI agent at its Gemini at Work event. It lives in the Gemini Enterprise app, works inside Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets and Calendar, and can be reached from mobile, desktop, the web, Slack and Microsoft 365.
Why it matters
It is only available to enterprise customers in private preview, so general access is not yet on offer.
WHO IT HITSEnterprise IT teams evaluating workplace AI assistants will face a new option that spans Workspace, Slack and Microsoft 365 from one interface, though the private-preview-only status means they cannot yet roll it out to all staff.

Google's announcement fits a pattern the company has been building toward: an AI assistant that is not confined to a single app or window. The new agent runs in the cloud and keeps the same context across mobile, desktop, the web, and third-party tools like Slack and Microsoft 365, which is the technical precondition for treating it as a persistent worker rather than a chat session.
The company is also drawing a line between its consumer and enterprise offerings. Gemini Spark, launched in May, gave subscribers a way to perform tasks across Workspace and the web, but through a separate interface inside the Gemini app. The universal agent announced this week is aimed at enterprise customers and lives inside the Gemini Enterprise app, where users can assign it tasks from a single place.
Google says the agent can work with job-specific sub-agents and can operate as a "coworker agent" with a dedicated identity and its own "@agents.company.com" email address. That identity framing may matter for businesses that need to track which actions were taken by an AI rather than a person, though the private preview status means the practical details are still being tested with a limited set of customers.
