What happened
Chrome 157's stable release adds a Language Detector API to Android Chrome that identifies what language a piece of text is written in, using a model stored on the device rather than a server.
Why it matters
because detection runs locally, text can be checked without sending it off the device, and it can work offline where the needed model is already present — potentially useful for features like suggesting translation for typed text.
What to watch
the next stable version, Chrome 158, is scheduled for release on 2026年11月17日.
WHO IT HITSWeb developers building on Chrome gain a language-detection capability on Android and new CSS controls for corner shapes, custom ellipsis strings and underline length; end users are affected indirectly through features developers build, such as translation suggestions.

Chrome 157's headline addition is the Language Detector API on Android, which shifts language identification from a server round-trip to a model held on the device. Google's stated reasoning is privacy and offline operation: the processing does not need to leave the handset, and detection can still run without an internet connection when the required model is already installed. One use case Google describes is automatically detecting the language of what a user typed and then proposing translation.
The rest of the release is a set of CSS refinements. A new corner property folds border-radius and corner-shape into a single declaration, with side-specific variants like corner-top-left and writing-direction-aware ones like corner-block-start. The notes also touch Sanitizer API options, Service Worker progress events, Web Bluetooth, Background Fetch restrictions and WebGPU.
One item is not yet live: icon-only buttons in Capability Elements were still under review when the notes were written. Chrome 158, the next stable release, is slated for 2026年11月17日.
