Trump names Dario（Anthropic！）over AI guardrails

The exchange is a direct clash over who sets AI's limits. Amodei's Sept. 12 essay, "We Must Pace the Frontier," argued the industry should slow the pace of capability gains, and proposed that AI companies in democracies coordinate on common safety standards and speed limits. He also said Anthropic would unilaterally give third-party evaluators access at the level of its own employees. Trump's Sept. 14 post answered that framing by claiming the only guardrail AI needs is a strong, high-IQ president, and that his administration already holds sweeping criminal and regulatory authority over these companies.

The post also attached a geopolitical charge: Trump wrote that a "sick conspiracy" against AI and data centers is under way, that only China is happy about it, and that whoever controls AI wins, with the US staying ahead of China and every other country.

The stakes turn on whether the naming marks a broader shift. After that post, Trump wrote three more calling AI-threat warnings a "HOAX" — with no names at all. So the pressure on Amodei may read as a personal rebuke rather than a new policy line, and the thing to watch is whether the administration follows with any concrete use of the authority it says it already has.
