AMD to invest $5B in Anthropic, deploy MI450 chips at scale

Advanced Micro Devices announced Wednesday that it will invest up to $5 billion（約8000億円） in Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, while the two firms entered a strategic partnership to deploy AMD's latest GPU technology at scale. Under the partnership, AMD will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of its Instinct MI450 series graphics processor units in AMD Helios rack-scale solutions, with initial deployment beginning in the first half of next year. Anthropic is already operating AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs in its infrastructure.

AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su commented: "We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale. This collaboration brings together Anthropic's leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing." Anthropic Chief Compute Officer Tom Brown added: "By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude."

Beyond the chip deployment, the companies launched a multiyear engineering collaboration in which teams will use Claude to optimize workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerate ROCm software development—an open-source software stack for GPU computation. AMD also committed to broadly adopt Claude across its own engineering and product development teams. The announcement buoyed AMD shares, which rose 1.8% in Wednesday late-afternoon trade and now show year-to-date gains of about 159%.

Anthropіc, which is backed by Amazon, has strengthened its compute position considerably in recent months. Earlier this year, Amazon announced it was investing another $5 billion（約8000億円） in the Claude maker, with up to an additional $20 billion（約3.2兆円） available in the future. The AI company has also confidentially filed for an initial public offering in the US earlier in 2026. AMD's latest deal builds on its broader push into AI infrastructure—earlier in the week the company announced an expanded strategic partnership with Microsoft spanning GPUs, central processing units, networking, and software on Microsoft's Azure cloud platform. AMD is scheduled to report its fiscal second-quarter results on August 4.

This partnership represents a significant infrastructure commitment by AMD to cement its role in the AI supply chain. While NVIDIA has dominated AI chip sales, AMD is using deep financial and technical partnerships to compete. By pledging $5 billion（約8000億円） to Anthropic—an AI company that has drawn backing from Amazon and is preparing for a public listing—AMD is betting on Claude's success and securing long-term demand for its hardware. The multiyear engineering collaboration, where Anthropic and AMD teams will jointly optimize software and accelerate ROCm development, signals a move beyond simple vendor-customer transactions toward joint development.

Anthropіc's position strengthens as well. Amazon has now committed $5 billion（約8000億円） with up to $20 billion（約3.2兆円） more available; now AMD adds $5 billion（約8000億円） in support. With confidential IPO filings already underway in 2026, these partnerships demonstrate both the company's appeal to major infrastructure players and its need to lock in reliable compute capacity as it scales. The simultaneous deepening of AMD's partnerships with both Anthropic and Microsoft (announced earlier in the week) shows the chipmaker is pursuing a diversified strategy across multiple cloud and AI customers.
