Google open-sources DESIGN.md, a template that teaches AI agents to follow brand guidelines automatically

Google released DESIGN.md, an open-source format extracted from its AI design tool Stitch, that provides AI agents (software that makes decisions and takes actions on its own) with a machine-readable rulebook for brand consistency—fonts, colors, spacing, tone, and design patterns all in one file.

Instead of designers writing separate instructions for each AI task, DESIGN.md lets them document brand rules once, and any AI agent can read and apply them automatically—similar to how a human designer memorizes a brand book and applies it to every project.

Design teams and marketing departments can now delegate routine design work (social posts, product mockups, marketing materials) to AI without manually reviewing each output for brand consistency; the AI checks its own work against the rules built into DESIGN.md before submitting.

DESIGN.md is free and open-source, available now for any company or designer to download and customize for their own brand—no waitlist, no licensing fee.
