Moonshot AI's Kimi K2.6 runs autonomous agents for days — exposing a critical gap in enterprise AI orchestration tools

Moonshot AI (a Chinese model provider) released Kimi K2.6, an AI model designed to run agents (self-directed AI systems that make decisions and take actions) continuously for hours or days. In internal testing, one agent ran autonomously for five straight days handling system monitoring and incident response without human intervention.

Traditional orchestration frameworks (the infrastructure that manages how AI agents run and interact) were built for agents that operate for seconds or minutes, then shut down. Kimi K2.6 is built for continuous execution instead — it maintains state and memory across days of operation, so an AI can handle complex, multi-step tasks like detecting server problems, diagnosing root causes, and triggering fixes without restarting between steps.

For business operations teams, this means AI agents could eventually handle on-call duties that currently require human engineers to stay alert 24/7 — detecting anomalies, escalating real incidents, and auto-recovering from common failures. However, most companies' existing AI infrastructure wasn't designed for this, so migration requires rebuilding orchestration layers that currently assume agents are short-lived and bounded.
