OpenAI adds GPT-Realtime-2 voice model with GPT-5-class reasoning to its Realtime API

OpenAI added 3 new models to their Realtime API. GPT-Realtime-2 is described by OpenAI as 'our first voice model with GPT-5-class reasoning that can handle harder requests and carry the conversation forward naturally.'

The model can look up calendar information, wait for a user's special phrase before responding, perform web searches via tool calls, and narrate actions simultaneously — features demonstrated in a prototype built with the API.

The author notes the API 'really earns that Realtime moniker with its speed' and found the ability to have it call tools while narrating to be 'an interesting UX.'
