Kindai University to deploy 4,000 Paperpal licenses

Kindai University's mid-term plan calls for becoming a research institution with world-class capabilities, and it sees international dissemination of research as essential to that goal. Writing and preparing papers for submission takes considerable effort, and the university notes that general-purpose generative AI cannot fully handle advanced academic expression. That gap led it to adopt a tool specialized for research support and academic writing.

Paperpal is provided by Cactus Communications, a science communication and technology company. Its AI is built on learning from published academic papers as well as proofreading expertise accumulated over more than 20 years by skilled academic editors at the English proofreading brand Editage. Users can receive real-time suggestions for accurate, context-appropriate English expressions, along with AI-assisted word reduction and rewriting, close to what a professional proofreader would check.

The move also fits Kindai University's broader AI push. In September 2026 it signed a comprehensive partnership agreement with Google Cloud, and it positions Paperpal as extending those efforts into the practical work of research. University President Matsumura Itaru said the environment is meant to lower language and psychological barriers to submission and encourage younger researchers, including graduate students, to try international journals, with the hope of building international co-authorship opportunities.
