Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said the company will release a travel-specific AI agent in the first half of 2027. It builds its own interface in real time from a library of hundreds of travel-specific components such as maps, photos, comparison tables, calendars and itineraries.
Why it matters
The agent is meant to assemble the right interface at the right moment rather than only chat, and Chesky argued general-purpose AI agents are not well suited to travel planning.
WHO IT HITSTravelers planning trips and managing bookings on Airbnb stand to get a single agent that assembles maps, comparisons and itineraries and handles changes or refunds. Airbnb's customer-support and booking-operations staff may see more of those tasks handled inside the agent, though the body does not detail staffing effects.

Chesky's argument rests on a distinction between routine AI assistance and travel planning. He said the latest AI agents such as Muse and Instinct are good at simple routine tasks like restaurant reservations and scheduling, but travel is different because it is something people aspire to. Deciding where to go and where to stay is part of the travel experience itself, and he cited that 80% of travelers say they enjoy spending time researching trips. People like looking at photos, comparing accommodations and making decisions with the people they are traveling with, and Chesky said general-purpose AI agents do not seem best suited to that.
That is why Airbnb is designing its own agent around a personalized interface rather than a chat window. Chesky described it as an AI-native custom-designed experience that selects information from a library of hundreds of travel-specific interface components, including maps, photos, comparison tables, calendars and itineraries, and composes them in real time to fit the customer's needs, providing the right UI at the right time. Airbnb says the agent will support travelers throughout the trip, from changing reservations and resolving payment problems to refunds, rebooking and 24-hour safety support, tasks it says outside AI agents cannot easily handle on their own.
Airbnb expects the agent to eventually support every aspect of a traveler's journey, including arranging services and experiences, not just lodging. That is an area Airbnb has been focusing on in recent years. The plan comes as Airbnb's business is strong: its third-quarter 2026 revenue was $4.87 billion, up 19% year over year.
