Checking official help pages, the author found all three export full history as raw JSON-style data, ChatGPT and Gemini share conversations via links, and only Gemini saves a single answer into Google Docs, Gmail or Sheets.
Why it matters
Chat responses are stored as references or raw data rather than finished documents, so knowledge workers who want a conversation as a shareable file still have to convert it themselves.

The three companies have each split "saving" into separate layers, and that structure explains the gap. Full-history export is raw data leaving the account, conversation sharing is the issuing of a link that others can open, and answer-level document creation is a write into a different product. The same word, saving, describes three different operations.
Gemini's answer-level document creation looks like a byproduct of Google already owning Docs, Sheets and Gmail, so a Gemini answer can be written into them under one login and one platform. ChatGPT and Claude do have file features, but those create new files rather than push an existing reply into an outside document tool.
PDF in particular appears to have been deferred, since a chat reply mixes Markdown, tables and code blocks while PDF is a fixed-layout format. ChatGPT's Deep Research is the one place a PDF appears, and that is likely because the output is designed as a structured report from the start. The findings come from official help pages checked on the day, not from hands-on testing, and Claude's conversation-sharing feature was not found in search rather than confirmed absent.
