Claude Fable 5 pulled by US govt three days after launch

That reliability, he said, fuelled a surge in agentic projects like OpenClaw and triggered "AI mania" among developers, alongside a wave of security incidents.

The June shutdown of Claude Fable 5 by the US government, three days after its release, illustrated how national security concerns can suddenly halt access to a top model. It returned on July 1 but was displaced eight days later by OpenAI's GPT-5.6. Willison noted this short window at the top makes world-ending marketing risky for business, since a shutdown can cut revenue during the period of peak demand.

The stakes for engineers and AI product teams may hinge on how quickly government interventions recur, and whether vendors adjust their launch messaging to avoid such disruptions. For now, the keynote suggests that the gap between a model's release and its replacement is narrowing, which could change how companies plan deployments and manage risk.
