Basecamp Research raises $140M for AI-designed cell therapies

Basecamp Research's Series C comes as AI-driven drug discovery draws interest from both traditional tech investors and strategic players. The round was led by S32, a fund tied to Google co-founder Bill Maris, and included unusual backers for a biotech startup: NATO, Nvidia and the Anthology Fund, a joint venture between Anthropic and Menlo Ventures. That mix suggests confidence not just in the company's AI models but in the broader thesis that machine learning can shorten the path from target discovery to therapy.

The company's platform, EDEN, was trained on a dataset called the Trillion Gene Atlas developed with Anthropic and Nvidia, among others. Basecamp's initial focus is in vivo cell therapies, which seek to cure disease by altering a patient's cells directly, a technically demanding approach that involves inserting designed DNA sequences. According to Basecamp, its software helps researchers identify delivery mechanisms and predict immune responses, tasks that normally slow early-stage development.

The freshness of this approach means the outcome hinges on whether Basecamp's AI-designed therapies can clear the preclinical and clinical hurdles that have tripped up many cell-therapy programs. The company plans to lean on pharmaceutical partners for that translation, so the pace of new alliances may be as telling as the science itself.
