Spotify launches ChatGPT-like music assistant for Premium users

On Tuesday, Spotify announced the rollout of a new interactive AI assistant for Premium users, available now in beta across the U.S., Ireland, and Sweden on iOS and Android. The feature is accessible to users 18 years old and above who have the app set to English. Unlike a dedicated AI DJ feature that Spotify already operates, this assistant is integrated into the main app experience—users can access it via the Home and Now Playing views and conduct typed or spoken conversations.

The assistant serves multiple functions. At its core, it helps users decide what to play next through iterative conversation. For example, users can ask it to "play some artists I haven't heard before," then refine the results by requesting a specific artist by name, narrowing to recent tracks, or adjusting the mood ("more upbeat"). Beyond music selection, the assistant can answer questions about the listening experience: what inspired a particular song, when an album was released, or which other artists a user might like based on current playback. It can also reflect on a user's own listening history—when they first played a track, what genres they have been streaming lately—and help them explore deeper into podcasts and audiobooks. The assistant also allows users to perform in-app actions, such as saving songs, adding tracks to their queue, or following artists.

Spotify confirmed that the technology behind the assistant is a hybrid approach: the company uses a mix of its own AI technology and models from multiple external providers, selected based on whichever performs best for a given task. The company did not provide further technical details in its announcement. This assistant represents an extension of Spotify's broader AI strategy, which already includes an AI DJ with voice interaction, AI-powered playlist generators, and integration with third-party chatbots like ChatGPT.

The rollout is designated as a beta release, meaning Spotify acknowledges that performance may be imperfect. The company states that user feedback will guide product improvement. The feature is currently limited to mobile devices in the three named markets, leaving open the possibility of geographic and platform expansion as the beta matures.

Spotify's launch of this conversational AI assistant is the latest move in a broader strategy to embed AI throughout its platform. The company already operates an AI DJ feature with voice interaction, offers AI-powered playlist builders, and integrates with third-party chatbots like ChatGPT. This new assistant extends that footprint by allowing users to have back-and-forth conversations directly within the core app experience—moving beyond dedicated AI features into the primary listening interface (Home and Now Playing views). By combining its proprietary AI with external models chosen for specific tasks, Spotify is acknowledging that no single AI engine is optimal for all use cases; the hybrid approach allows flexibility to evolve capabilities as better models become available.
