Akamai signs $11.6 billion, 7-year Anthropic cloud deal

Akamai Cloud is built around a distributed network spanning thousands of locations from core to edge, and the company says the platform is designed to run on diverse hardware so users can build and run applications and optimize how they reach users and agents. That positioning is central to how this contract is framed: instead of only serving content closer to end users, Akamai is pitching its network as a place to run CPU-heavy work for a large AI model developer.

The financial shape of the arrangement matters as much as the headline figure. Akamai expects total capital expenditure tied to the $11.6 billion investment to be about $5.5 billion. It also says its 2026 revenue outlook is unchanged, while 2026 capital expenditure is expected to rise by roughly $1.7 billion to secure and pre-buy critical supply-chain components, including memory. In other words, the spending comes before the revenue shows up in the outlook.

What the deal ultimately hinges on, then, is execution on that build-out and the availability of the components Akamai has moved to pre-purchase. For Anthropic, the contract is a multi-year commitment to CPU capacity; for Akamai, it is a test of whether its distributed platform can convert a large AI infrastructure commitment into durable business without disturbing its existing revenue expectations.
