What happened
Amazon blocked Meta's AI agent Muse from shopping on Amazon.com, GeekWire reported September 20. Amazon said it asked Meta to exempt Amazon, but Meta refused, and users now see a terms-of-service popup.
Why it matters
Purchases made on a shopper's behalf are usually run with the seller's consent, Amazon argues, citing food-delivery and travel-booking examples. Amazon says Muse did not identify itself as an AI agent or disclose its access in advance.
What to watch
Amazon would not say whether it is considering legal action, and it is already in talks with Meta. Watch whether Shopify's Shop Pay rollout, announced by Tobi Lütke and Alexander Wang on September 21, pulls more merchants to Meta's side.
WHO IT HITSShoppers who let Muse handle purchases will find Amazon closed off, at least for now. Retail and e-commerce platform teams weighing whether to let third-party AI agents transact on their sites are the ones who will have to decide whether to follow Amazon's stance or Shopify's.

The clash did not start here. Amazon has spent the past year pushing outside AI agents off its site: in November 2025 it told Perplexity to stop its Comet AI browser's agent from buying on Amazon, Perplexity called the move bullying, and Amazon later sued. GeekWire reports Amazon is also moving to block shopping agents from Google and OpenAI, so the Meta block fits a pattern rather than standing alone.
The two companies are not simply rivals. Since 2023 shoppers have been able to buy Amazon products inside Facebook and Instagram, and in April Meta struck a multi-billion-dollar deal to run agentic AI processing on Amazon's Graviton chips. That mix of partnership and blockade is likely why Amazon says it is in direct talks with Meta and declined to comment on possible legal action.
Muse itself arrived on September 8 in the US and within a week passed ChatGPT to top the free app ranking on the US App Store, while Amazon has its own AI shopping push, including Alexa for Shopping in May and its Buy for Me feature, which Amazon stresses labels itself as an agent and lets brands opt out. The outcome may hinge on whether merchants follow Shopify's open stance or Amazon's consent-first one — a choice that will shape how easily agent-driven purchases reach mainstream shoppers.
