What happened
Amazon's Q3 EPS of $1.89 missed the $2.01 estimate and revenue rose 12% to $201.94 billion, while AWS grew 39% to $46 billion and operating margin hit a record 13.9%.
Why it matters
The miss triggered a selloff, but record profitability and accelerating cloud growth suggest the pullback may be a buying opportunity rather than a warning sign.

Amazon's third-quarter report landed on Thursday evening, and by Friday premarket the stock was down roughly 7% as investors reacted to a rare top-and-bottom-line miss. The disappointment echoed Alphabet's, where concerns about massive AI spending overshadowed encouraging growth. What separates Amazon's situation is the underlying profitability trend: operating income surged 61% to $28.1 billion even as the company poured money into AI infrastructure, producing a record 13.9% operating margin.
AWS did much of the heavy lifting, with revenue rising 39% to $46 billion, its fastest growth in nearly five years, and operating income up 55% to $17.8 billion. Demand for AI infrastructure and cloud computing, including custom Trainium chips and the Bedrock generative AI platform, is driving that acceleration, and new agreements with OpenAI, Meta Platforms and Nvidia further expand the ecosystem.
The tension for investors is the spending. Amazon reaffirmed a $220 billion capital expenditure outlook for 2026, and free cash flow turned negative $33.5 billion for the quarter, bringing the trailing 12-month outflow to $42.4 billion, versus positive $14.8 billion a year earlier. That pressure, together with the earnings miss, explains the selloff. Yet management's confidence in future growth, including projections for AWS revenue exceeding 40% in 2027 and 2028, is why the buy-the-dip debate is now front and center.
