Microsoft announced in September 2026 that Copilot now combines Chat, Cowork, Code and Autopilot in one interface, with new features rolling out in stages and a redesigned desktop app.

Microsoft framed the redesign around a principle it calls "AI in the Flow of Human Ambition" — the idea that people should not have to adapt to AI, but rather AI should support what people want to do. The September 2026 update is the largest change since Copilot's first release more than three years earlier, and it goes beyond individuals to organizations.
A key piece is Work IQ, which accumulates context about a user's current work, future goals and what is happening in the organization, then makes that context available seamlessly across Chat, Cowork, Code and Autopilot. Microsoft also announced "Office in Copilot," letting users work with Word, Excel and PowerPoint inside Copilot, while ensuring Copilot only references information the user has access to and carries sensitivity labels through to outputs.
Okazaki cited Code as a potential trigger for stalled digital transformation. In one example, he created a seating-chart app almost instantly for a roundtable with interns. He described a common pattern: a spreadsheet-based process that a team wants to move to a web app with workflow support. Work IQ can surface the business requirement from everyday meeting discussions stored in Microsoft 365, and Code can then build the app. He also pointed to "Continuous Learning" as a keyword, noting that data accumulation will shift from being for human use to also being for AI use.
