Pentagon AI chief confirms Department of Defense is expanding use of Google Gemini for classified projects

Pentagon AI chief Cameron Stanley confirmed to CNBC that the Department of Defense is expanding its use of Google's Gemini model for classified projects, about two months after the DOD dropped Anthropic and designated it as a supply chain risk.

The Pentagon is also working with OpenAI and other vendors to modernize wartime capabilities. Stanley stated that the DOD is using Gemini to save time and money, with thousands of man hours being saved on a weekly basis.

The arrangement faces internal opposition at Google, where more than 700 employees signed a letter to CEO Sundar Pichai this week calling for the company to reject classified workloads, citing concerns about the technology being used in inhumane or extremely harmful ways.
