Adobe has released Firefly AI Assistant (beta), a chatbot interface that can operate capabilities across Photoshop, Illustrator, and other Adobe apps to complete design tasks described in natural language.
Unlike typical AI image generators, the assistant explains its editing process step-by-step using established Photoshop and Lightroom terminology, and acknowledges its limitations—for example, offering alternative approaches when it cannot complete a requested task as specified.
The results are convincing at a glance but fall short of professional quality: photo edits have colors that are too vivid or alterations not properly blended, and generative additions (such as objects added to images) are visually subpar compared to other edits. For creative professionals, the tool may feel more like babysitting a new intern than having a helpful colleague.
