Caterpillar backlog hits $72 billion as AI data centers drive power demand

Caterpillar, traditionally a bellwether for construction, is seeing its Power & Energy segment stretch order books far beyond usual timeframes. Customers are committing through 2030, a sign that data center power needs are a long-term structural shift. The company's 92% backlog growth is tied directly to AI-related demand, not housing or infrastructure starts.

The challenge now is operational, not commercial. With about 59% of the backlog due within a year, restarting the 10-megawatt gas engine platform—adding 1.5 gigawatts—looks like a direct response. The company's stock is up over 90% in 12 months, which suggests investors already see the transformation.

What remains unclear is how quickly capacity can realistically return. If production ramps faster than expected, Caterpillar could capture even more of this demand. If it lags, the company risks order delays, which could push some commitments further out. The next year of shipment data will show whether its factory plans are hitting the mark.
