What happened
Apple's June-quarter revenue rose 16.4% to $109.42 billion and gross margin reached 50.1%, while Microsoft posted $92.28 billion revenue, $45.2 billion capex and a 66% Microsoft Cloud gross margin.
Why it matters
Apple is keeping more of each dollar of sales while Microsoft reinvests heavily in AI data centers, so their profit trajectories are diverging even though both beat estimates.
Summaries like this, every morning.
Both companies beat estimates in their most recent reports, but the contrast lies in how they convert sales into profit. Apple's June-quarter operating income rose 26.57%, faster than its 16.4% revenue growth, a sign of margin expansion. That margin came with warnings: tariff refunds added roughly two percentage points, and memory costs rose, which Tim Cook described as "a 100-year flood on the memory pricing." Apple also keeps infrastructure spending light by using a hybrid AI model that combines its own data centers with third-party cloud capacity, and by running Siri AI on the device itself.
Microsoft grew faster at 18.8% revenue growth, but its Microsoft Cloud gross margin fell to 66% as sales shifted toward Azure. Capital expenditures of $45.2 billion left free cash flow at $18.6 billion, and operating cash flow was $58 billion, so reinvestment is absorbing most of the cash. CFO Amy Hood said that "each dollar of CapEx has the potential to support more revenue and higher returns over time," a claim supported by a $677 billion commercial backlog, up 73%.
Apple trades near 45 times earnings, compared with 29 for Microsoft, and Apple shares are up 27.12% year to date versus 8.6% for Microsoft. Upcoming results will test whether Apple's September-quarter gross margin falls within its July guidance of 47% to 48%, and whether Microsoft's efficiency gains lift cloud margins before capex peaks.
