What happened
Bloom Energy stock fell 4% to $229.83, still up 165% year to date, while Caterpillar slipped 3% to $727.55 and Generac Holdings dropped 1% to $195.67.
Why it matters
Capital is rotating out of AI and tech into defensive sectors, and Bloom's reliance on data center power demand leaves it more exposed than Caterpillar or Generac, which serve broader customers.

Bloom Energy's 165% year-to-date rally was built on a specific claim from its CEO: at the company's Q2 FY2026 results on July 28, he said "all the major US hyperscalers and over a dozen US neoclouds, AI labs, and colocation data center operators have validated and approved our power solutions… Bloom is now a standard for AI onsite power." That endorsement tied the company's fortunes tightly to data center builders who choose onsite generation to skip the wait for grid capacity.
The Q2 numbers backed the story. Revenue of $1.07 billion was up 165.5% year over year, non-GAAP EPS of $0.78 beat the $0.41 estimate, product revenue jumped 215% to $935.4 million, GAAP gross margin expanded to 33.4%, and operating cash flow reached $226.4 million. GAAP operating income also swung to a profit from a loss a year earlier.
The reversal matters because the same concentration that fueled the rally now works in reverse. Caterpillar and Generac sell into the same buildings but reach broader customer bases, which may explain why their declines of 3% and 1% were smaller than Bloom's 4% drop. With the Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF down only 0.2% and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust up 0.1%, the selloff appears concentrated in AI power names rather than the wider market. Bloom's 2026 targets of $3.9 billion to $4.2 billion in revenue lean on data center operators continuing to add onsite generation at a steady pace.
